Commissioning of NAEC Projects at the Center for Energy Research and Training(CERT), Zaria
Friday, 27th January 2023 marked a milestone for Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission(NAEC) as it completed and commissioned some of the projects embarked by the Commission at one of its centres; Center for Energy Research and Training(CERT), Zaria.
The Neutronic Health Physics and Dosimetry Laboratory Block and the Researcher’s Building was commissioned on behalf of the President by The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha. Chm/CEO, NAEC, Prof Yusuf Ahmed speaking at the occasion thanked the SGF for honouring the invitation to commission the projects. He said one of the mandates given to him on assumption of office in 2021 was to “key into the Medium Term Framework of the administration by completing all on- going projects before embarking on new projects”. The Neutronic Lab will therefore go a long way in the research and development activities of the centre in the design of rector cores.
The Lab will also house the Internet Reactor lab and also carry out personal monitoring and dosimetry activities. The Center, Prof. Ahmed said is currently collaborating with University Hospitals across the country that have doses and radiation facilities on personal monitoring. Other activities of the facility will be to advise government on radiation mapping across the country.
In his reaction, the SGF thanked NAEC/ABU for given him the opportunity to commission the projects on behalf of Mr President. He said “nuclear medicine and investigation were key to the future in human health as such Nigeria must prepare itself for the future” He commended NAEC/ABU for hosting the project and hope the project will be of immense benefit not only to Nigeria but to Africa as a whole. Also present at the occasion were,Vice Chancellor, ABU, Zaria, Prof Kabiru Bala, Representative of the Emir Of Zaria, Permanent Secretaries, Ecological Project Office, Mallam Ibrahim Shehu and Mr James Sule, Cabinet Office.
