NAEC, IAEA Begin Phase-II Review for Nigeria’s Second Research Reactor

NAEC and IAEA have commenced the Phase II of an Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) Mission for Nigeria’s proposed Multi-purpose Research Reactor.

Dubbed Research Reactor-2 (RR2), the facility is expected to serve as a cornerstone for national development. Key objectives for the project include supporting advanced scientific research, enhancing the education and training of nuclear professionals, enabling materials testing, and facilitating neutron activation analysis. Additionally, the reactor holds potential for the production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications.

This was disclosed by the Acting Chairman/CEO of NAEC, Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, in his opening address at the launch of the INIR Phase-II mission in Abuja, Nigeria.

Leading the three-man IAEA expert team, Andrey Sitnikov assured NAEC and the Nigerian government of the Agency’s full cooperation to ensure the success of the review.

It would be recalled that the Phase-I INIR mission was successfully conducted in 2015.
