NAEC Seeks Enhanced Nuclear Engineering Collaboration with Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja

The Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, on Tuesday, 14th Aprill paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, Prof. Hakeem Babtunde Fawehinmi, to strengthen existing collaboration between the Commission and the University.

During the visit, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Abdulfatai Jimoh, acknowledged NAEC’s pivotal role in establishing the University’s Nuclear Engineering programme. He noted the Commission’s support through the National University Commission(NUC) Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) and the provision of staff on a pro bono basis to ensure the successful take-off of the programme. Prof. Jimoh also informed the NAEC delegation of the proposed visit by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to the University to carry out its verification exercise.

In his remarks, the Acting Chairman expressed appreciation to the Vice Chancellor for the warm reception and congratulated him on his appointment as the substantive Vice Chancellor. He further emphasized the need to affiliate the Nuclear Technology Centre (NTC) with the University in order to strengthen research and enhance capacity development.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor welcomed the Acting Chairman and the NAEC team. He expressed appreciation for the Commission’s efforts toward the birth of the Nuclear Engineering programme and for its continued human resource support. The Vice Chancellor affirmed that the University is open to affiliating with the NTC, adding that modalities for the affiliation will be worked out. He thanked the Chairman and his team for the visit.
