The 70th IAEA General Conference concluded today, Friday, 18 September 2026, in Vienna, Austria, following a week of deliberations on issues relating to the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.

The Nigerian delegation to the Conference was led by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Umar Ahmed, alongside the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Anthony I. G. Ekedegwa.

The Conference, which commenced on 14 September, brought together representatives from 181 IAEA Member States to review the Agency’s activities and deliberate on matters concerning nuclear science and technology.

Held annually since the establishment of the IAEA in 1957, the General Conference provides a platform for Member States to consider a broad range of issues related to the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, including energy production, cancer care, food security, water management, nuclear safety and security, and safeguards.

The decisions and resolutions adopted during the Conference will contribute to shaping the IAEA’s programme of work for the year ahead, helping to ensure that the Agency’s activities remain effective
