Ag. Chairman NAEC in talks with Chinese Ambassador

The Ag. Chairman/CEO, NAEC, Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa was on Monday, 18th November, 2024 at the Chinese Embassy in Abuja to pay a courtesy visit to the new Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Yu Dunhai as part of his familiarization tour to stakeholders since assumption of office. The purpose of the visit was to further strengthen the partnership between the two countries on Nigeria’s nuclear energy programme in the areas of manpower training and capacity development, nuclear power plant development and the Multi – Purpose Research Reactor. The Ag. Chairman also informed the Ambassador that one of his short term priorities since taking over leadership of NAEC is the revitalization of the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) in Sheda.

Responding, the Amb. Yu Dunhai, thanked the Ag. Chairman for the visit and assured the NAEC delegation of China’s commitment towards the implementation of Nigeria’s nuclear energy programme. He said, ”as the most populous country in Africa, China attaches great importance to the the relationship between the two countries” and pledged China’s commitment towards assisting Nigeria in it’s nuclear energy programme. On the demand regarding the GIF, the Ambassador assured the NAEC team that China is willing to meet it’s demands and promised to reach out to the Chinese govt to treat the matter with priority.

At the end of the meeting, it was resolved that moving forward, discussions held between the two countries will be translated into tangible results for the socioeconomic development of Nigeria.
