DG, IAEA Holds Talks with SGF

In continuation of his working visit to Nigeria to attend the High Level Regional Seminar on Promoting Cancer Awareness and Advocacy
Programmes, the DG, IAEA, Mr. Rafael Grossi met with the SGF, Senator George Akume at his office.Receiving the delegation, the SGF thanked the DG for the visit and reiterated the continued scourge and challenges of cancer in Nigeria and across the globe. This he said requires “commitment and strong partnership with the IAEA”.

He emphasized that ” the critical role of the IAEA is clear in this perspective as advocacy and cancer awareness are important at ensuring early detection and therefore effective management must be put in place”.
The SGF commended the unwavering and continued dedication of NAEC as the NLO for IAEA towards ensuring that nuclear contributes to the overall socio-economic development of the country particularly in power and non power areas.

In his response, the DG thanked the SGF for receiving his delegation. His visit he said is “timely and very important as the IAEA is working with Nigeria in key areas towards the use of nuclear energy for electricity generation”.
Cancer he said is a “big problem in Africa and the IAEA is ready to support Nigeria in this regard by providing state-of- the- art equipment and necessary training”.

He informed the SGF that the IAEA is also assisting Nigeria in other welfare programmes such as food irradiation,SMART agricultural activities,water management etc.
