NAEC Talks with Ministry of Education

NAEC and the Federal Ministry of Education have held discussions on the need to partner  with the Ministry on human capacity development in nuclear science and engineering by Universities and Polytechnics in the country.

 Prof. Yusuf A. Ahmed, Chairman/CEO, NAEC, accompanied by NAEC Management staff were received by the Hon. Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu in his office at Abuja. Prof. Ahmed suggested to the Hon. Minister to direct the National University Commission(NUC) to   expedite action on the curriculum  for nuclear science and engineering presented to it by the Commission. This is   to enable  commencement of the programme in  tertiary institutions as soon as possible.

Prof Ahmed emphasized in the need to “key into the policy programme of the Federal government on education anchored by the Ministry”. He also prayed for the inclusion of the onshore – offshore scholarship scheme between the Universities and the Ministry be extended to include nuclear science and engineering.Responding, the Minister commended the Commission on its    effort with the NUC towards localising the training of experts in the nuclear  sector. 

He said “globally, atomic energy with it’s side effects and advantages is now a focus, so we have to fully utilize the  advantages of atomic energy since Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind on such a global engagement”.

He assured the NAEC delegation that the Ministry will as a matter of urgency look into it’s request for  immediate compliance by the NUC.
