Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference

Country representatives from around the world have converged at the United Nations headquarters in New York for the 2022 Treaty on the Non- Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference (RevCon).

Objectives of the treaty’s 191 nation which Nigeria is a signatory, is to ensure that the 5 Nuclear Weapon States(NWS)- United State,United Kingdom,Russia,China and France pursue disarmament ” in good faith” as well as prohibit the transfer of nuclear weapons technology by the NWS to Non- Weapon States(NNWS).

Likewise the treaty ensures that all NNWS pursue ONLY peaceful uses of nuclear energy under safeguard systems supervised by the IAEA.

This will be the 10th of such conferences since the NPT was established in 1970.

The conference is expected run through 1-26 August 2022.
