NAEC Delegation on Courtesy Visit to Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja

The Ag. Chairman, NAEC, Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa has paid a courtesy visit to the Ag. Vice- Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja (formerly University of Abuja). The visit was a follow up to earlier talks on collaboration with the University on its Nuclear Engineering Programme. The Ag. Chairman restated the Commission’s dedication to supporting the development and training in nuclear science in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which is aimed to bolster national capacity through educational programs, fellowships, and other related activities. He went further to say that Nuclear technology has proven invaluable not only in energy production but also in various non-power applications such as health and agriculture. Plans he said are underway to establish a Multi-Purpose Research Reactor for the production of medical radioisotopes, for the treatment and diagnosis of cancer. This initiative when actualized will be operational in Sheda, in collaboration with the University. The reactor will also be particularly beneficial to the oil industry for tasks such as oil logging and underground water tracing.
The Ag. Chairman in his prayers to the Ag. VC requested the University to expedite action and provide all necessary support in finalizing the process required for the completion of the resource verification exercise; provide the necessary support for the smooth take-off of the Department of Nuclear Engineering by the next academic session.
 
The Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Patricia Manko Lar, reacting to the Ag. Chairman’s speech welcomed the delegation and appreciated NAEC for its enormous contribution in the development of the Nuclear Engineering Programme in the University and informed that the NUC is at the verge of accrediting the programme. She said she is looking forward to signing the MOU and working together with NAEC to achieve great outcomes. She believes this will give the university the opportunity to generate extra funds for more researches when they partner with other Universities in this regard.
