The Ag. Chairman/CEO, NAEC, Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa was on Monday, 18th November, 2024 at the Chinese Embassy in Abuja to pay a courtesy visit to the new Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Yu Dunhai as part of his familiarization tour to stakeholders since assumption of office.
The purpose of the visit was to further strengthen the partnership between the two countries on Nigeria’s nuclear energy programme in the areas of manpower training and capacity development, nuclear power plant development and the Multi – Purpose Research Reactor. The Ag. Chairman also informed the Ambassador that one of his short term priorities since taking over leadership of NAEC is the revitalization of the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) in Sheda.
NAEC LEADERSHIP HANDOVER CEREMONY
On Friday, 15th November 2024, the former Chairman, NAEC, Prof. Yusuf A. Ahmed officially handed over the mantle of leadership of the Commission to the Ag. Chairman/CEO,NAEC Engr. Anthony I.G. Ekedegwa after the expiration of the former’s tenure as Chief Executive Officer on September 3rd, 2024.
During a brief ceremony at the Commission’s headquarters which was witnessed by some Management Staff, the Ag. Chairman on behalf of the entire NAEC family thanked Prof. Ahmed and expressed gratitude for his stewardship of the Commission during his tenure.
At the invitation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, H. E. Amb. Yusuf M. Tuggar, the Ag. Chairman/CEO of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, Engr. Anthony I.G. Ekedegwa was part of Nigeria’s delegation to the First Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum in Sochi.
On the sidelines of the Conference, which kicked off on Saturday, 9th November, 2024 in Sochi, at the Russian Federation, the NAEC delegation held extensive discussions with representatives from the TOMSK Polytechnic University, the Russian Federation and the Head of Floating Nuclear Power Plant Project in ROSATOM.
The Ag. Chairman, NAEC, Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa on Thursday, 31st October, led a delegation to the National Assembly for talks with the Senate Committee on Atomic and Nuclear Energy.
In his brief to the Committee Chair, Senator Sahabi Alhaji Yau, the Ag. Chairman sought for the cooperation of the Committee towards the implementation of the nuclear energy programme. He informed the Committee that paramount on his agenda is the urgent need to resuscitate and commercialize the Gamma Irradiation Facility at the Nuclear Technology Center (NTC), in Sheda.
IAEA Experts Visit NAEC
An IAEA Expert Mission in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) through the Integrated Mission Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy (imPACT) is in Nigeria for cancer control exercise.
The imPACT Review Mission which is at the request of Member States is an IAEA service intended to assess Member States readiness to develop and implement long term radiation medicine infrastructure and capacity building plans, including the relevant safety, regulatory and quality assessment requirements within the framework of a national control programme.

Ag. Chairman, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman, House Committee on Renewable Energy Hon Afam Ogene today 10/10/2024. The Ag. Chairman sought the cooperation of the Committee in the discharge of his duty. Hon Ogene promised to assist the Commission to ensure it achieves its mandate.
NAEC gets new acting head
A new Acting Head has been appointed for the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC).
He is Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa. His appointment by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation comes after the expiration of the three year tenure of Prof. Yusuf Ahmed.
Until his appointment, Engr. Ekedegwa was Director, Planning, Licensing, Sitting and Design (PLSD) of the Commission.
He is expected to oversee the affairs of the Commission pending the appointment of a substantive Chairman/CEO by the President.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria and President Xi Jinping of China on Tuesday 3rd September, 2024 in China signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy..
Parties to the MoU are Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and the National Energy Administration of the People’s Republic of China. Other government dignitaries present at the signing were, Minister of Finance, Adebayo Olawole Edun, Engr. David Umahi, Honourable Minister of Works and Chm/CEO, NAEC, Prof. Yusuf A. Ahmed.
The Chief of Staff (CoS) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila on 21st August, 2024 paid a working visit to the headquarters of NAEC in Abuja. The CoS had on his delegation the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, the Permanent Secretary State House, Engineer Olufunsho Adebiyi.
Professor Yusuf A. Ahmed, Chairman, NAEC along with his Management team received the CoS at the head office conference room.
In his welcome address, Prof. Ahmed presented a brief on the mandate and activities of the Commission as well as its Centers across the country.
The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and the David Umahi Federal University of Health Science (DUFUHS) on Thursday, 11th July, 2023, in Abuja signed an MoU for collaborative research and development of the application of nuclear science and technology in health and allied areas.
Prof. Jesse Aneka, VC, DUFUHS who signed on behalf of the University remarked that “the MoU is expected to facilitate knowledge and information transfer between NAEC, DUFUHS and other research institutions to help in policy formulation in the health sector”.
Joint Nigeria - Japan Delegation on Nuclear Power visits NAEC
A delegation from the Federal Ministry of Power (FMP) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has held discussions with NAEC Management at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. The team was received by the CHM/CEO, NAEC, Prof. Yusuf Ahmed and Director-NPPD, Prof. Abdullah A. Mati.
The discussions were centered on the inclusion of nuclear power as an independent source of power in the improved 2023 ELECTRICITY ACT as well as provision of enabling environment to foster deployment of nuclear power in the country’s energy mix.
NAEC and IAEA conclude Expert Mission
Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) concludes Expert Mission to review the Stakeholder Engagement Strategy Document on NPP which is expected to serve as a guide to key stakeholders for effective and constructive engagement during the development of Nigeria’s Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and throughout its life cycle.
A team of inspectors from the United States Department of Energy (US-DOE) and the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) today, Monday 10th June, 2024 were at NTC Sheda on routine inspection. The visit was led by Mr. Mac-Eteli Humphrey from the NNRA.
The Director NTC, Dr Tukur Hamman Gabdo welcomed the team to NTC and the place of their primary assignment, the GIF.
Similarly, the Deputy Director GIF, Engineer TK Mustapha presented an overview of physical protection systems of the GIF and brought the team up to speed with activities at the GIF.
IAEA Delegation visits the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada
In continuation of the IAEA’ s delegation visit to Nigeria,the Head, African Division, IAEA, Prof. Abdulrazak Shaukat accompanied by the Chairman/CEO, NAEC, Prof. Yusuf A. Ahmed paid a working visit to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwaladawa.
The delegation was conducted round the hospital facilities by the UATH, CMD, Prof. Bisallah Ekele.
In continuation of his working visit to Nigeria to attend the High Level Regional Seminar on Promoting Cancer Awareness and Advocacy
Programmes, the DG, IAEA, Mr. Rafael Grossi met with the SGF, Sen. George Akume at his office.
Receiving the delegation, the SGF thanked the DG for the visit and reiterated the continued scourge and challenges of cancer in Nigeria and across the globe. This he said requires “commitment and strong partnership with the IAEA”.
He emphasized that ” the critical role of the IAEA is clear in this perspective as advocacy and cancer awareness are important at ensuring early detection and therefore effective management must be put in place”.
The DG, IAEA on Wednesday, 15th May, 2024 was at the National Hospital, Abuja to access and get updates on the state of equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
The DG who was accompanied by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa and the Chm/CEO,NAEC, Prof. Yusuf Ahmed, DG Nigeria Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRA), Dr, Usman Salami Aliyu, Dr. Yau Idris, DG, NNRA were received and conducted around the hospital facilities by the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Muhammad Raji. The DG IAEA during the inspection of equipment at the Department of Nuclear Medicine made a commitment to replace non-functioning equipment at the hospital as soon as possible.
A tripartite meeting of the NNRA, NAEC and National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) in collaboration with the IAEA was declared open on Monday, 13th May, 2024 in Abuja.
The meetings include the IAEA/AFRA RAF 9070 first Coordination meeting on Enhancing the Radiation Safety Infrastructure, the IAEA Coordinating Meeting RAF 6060 project on Enhancing Member States Capacity for Improved Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment coordinated by the NNRA and NICRAT respectively.
Recently on the 6th of May, 2024 at the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State, Nigeria, the Chairman and Chief Executive NAEC, Prof. Yusuf A. Ahmed commissioned the Advanced Nanotechnology and Computational Physics Laboratory. The Lab which is being funded by the European Union through the African Research Initiatives for Scientific Excellence – Pilot Programme (ARISE-PP) is expected to kick start the award of B.Sc. in Nano- science and technology as well as other related research and training activities in Nanotechnology at the University.

There are diverse applications of Atomic Energy in Nigeria in the fields of industry, medicine, agriculture, environment, water resources and research. The petroleum industry is the largest importer and user of radioactive sources in the country. NAEC marks 20 years of the safe operation of Nigeria’s Nuclear Research Reactor (NIRR-1) at the Center for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Zaria.
To celebrate this milestone, the CERT organized a one day symposium on Thursday, 2nd May, 2024 with the theme: “Achievements, Challenges and Prospects”.
Declaring the symposium open, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, represented by his SA, on Technical Matters, Prof. Bolaji Babatunde commended NAEC and CERT for it’s commitment towards the utilisation of the NIRR-1 for the training of personnel critical in the deployment of Nuclear science and technology for the socio-economic development of the country.
The Chairman, NAEC Prof. Yusuf A. Ahmed on Monday, 22nd April, 2023 received in audience a delegation from the Office of International Security System within the Nuclear Security Administration (INS/NNSA) of the United States Department of Energy (DoE) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
The delegation led by Alexander Moe (INS), held discussions on strengthening collaboration with NAEC on nuclear security as well as updates on The Center for Energy Research and Training’s (CERT) Physical Protection System (PPS).
Discussions also explored ways of possible collaboration with NAEC in the areas of training and infrastructural support.
Cadets from the Mathematics department of the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna, visited the NTC as part of its annual educational field trip to the facilities under NAEC.
The DD/Head GIF, Engineer TK Mustapha who represented the Chairman/CEO NAEC, Prof. Ahmed Yusuf welcomed the cadets and gave a brief overview of the activities of the commission and charged the cadets to be attentive and be interactive during the field trip and tour of the facility at NTC.
The cadets received workshop on Common Trends of scientific computing, Mathematical modelling and Nuclear Bias as well as Regulatory and Safety aspects of Radioactive Waste.
As part of the FG’s efforts on the deployment of Nuclear Power Plants & the Multi Purpose Research Reactor for various applications in Nigeria, NAEC on Wednesday, 6th March, 2024 in Abuja kicked off a 2 day national workshop on ‘Local Content Development and Participation of Nigeria’s Industries in the Sitting and Design of Research Reactor for Multipurpose Application in Nigeria”. The Workshop is aimed at engaging Stakeholders(SH) on issues with Nigerian local content law and provisions available for local industry participation in nuclear related projects.
The United States Office of Multilateral and Nuclear Security and the UK Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) in collaboration with the Civilian Research and Development Foundation(CRDF) organized a “Trilateral Meeting on Improving Access to Cancer Care for Rural Population in West Africa” at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja from 29th February to 1st March, 2024.
The goal and objective of the meeting was to facilitate discussion among a wide range of experts-level participants.
The Nuclear Energy Agency(NEA), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the African Commission on Nuclear Energy(AFCONE) held a special high- level meeting on the margins of the 37th ordinary session of the African Union(AU) Summit.
The event, Advancing Sustainable Economic Development: Building Capacity in Nuclear Energy – related Skills,Business and Policy took place on Friday,16th February,2024 in Addis Ababa,Ethiopa
The Chairman/CEO, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Prof Yusuf A. Ahmed on Tuesday 13th February, 2024 launched the maiden edition of the NAEC Newsletter called “The Atom”. In his remarks, the CEO emphasized on the importance and purpose of the newsletter, which he said is to create better awareness among stakeholders on the activities of the Commission.
Prof. A. Matti, the Chairman of the Editorial Board explained that the newsletter took the committee time to ensure the quality stand the test of time.
The Chm/CEO, NAEC, Prof Yusuf A. Ahmed, Monday, 5th February, 2024, declared open a four day IAEA Expert Mission to Nigeria to assist NAEC develop it’s Integrated Management System (IMS), a necessary condition to fully attain Milestone 2 of Nigeria ‘s Nuclear Energy Programme.
The IMS is geared towards combining all policies, processes and procedures of NAEC into one unified framework thereby helping in achieving the leadership and safety objectives in all operations of NAEC.
The future of nuclear science and technology in Nigeria is with the young generation especially at secondary school level. This was contained in a welcome remark by the chairman/CEO NAEC at the one day Educational Outreach program for secondary schools in the North Central Region of Nigeria held at the faculty of Engineering lecture theatre of the university of Abuja.
NAEC and it’s officials led by the Chairman/CEO, Prof Yusuf A. Ahmed on Tuesday, 30th January,2024 held discussions on wide range of issues concerning the Commission with the Hon.Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar(OON).
Some of the issues presented to the Hon. Minister for discussion by the Chairman included: Signing of the Inter-governmental Agreement(IGA) and MoU on nuclear programme with China
NAEC and the Federal Ministry of Education have held discussions on the need to partner with the Ministry on human capacity development in nuclear science and engineering by Universities and Polytechnics in the country.

NAEC and CNNC Seek Collaboration on Nuclear Science and Technology
Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and China National Nuclear Cooperation (CNNC) on Friday 6th, October, 2023 in Lagos held bilateral talks to explore further areas of cooperation on the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology.
The talks came on the sidelines during the visit to Nigeria by the President of CNNC, Gu Jun at the official commissioning of the CNNC African Office in Lagos, Nigeria. The CNNC Boss also held discussion on plans ahead of Mr. President’s visit to China later this month. Prof. Yusuf A. Ahmed, Chairman/CEO, NAEC led the delegation from NAEC.
NAEC Seeks Collaboration with PAEC
At the just concluded 67th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria, Nigeria and Pakistan held discussions on modalities for partnership between the two countries in the area of the peaceful application of nuclear Science and Technology.

NAEC Signs Country Programme Framework with the IAEA
Prof. Yusuf Ahmed, Chairman of Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and Mr. Hua Liu, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation, signed Nigeria’s Country Programme Framework (CPF) for the period of 2024–2029 on 27 September 2023 on the margins of the General Conference. A CPF is the frame of reference for the medium-term planning of technical cooperation between a Member State and the IAEA and identifies priority areas where the transfer of nuclear technology and technical cooperation resources will be directed to support national development goals.
The 67th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday, 26th September 2023 entered its second day.
Nigeria’s delegation to the Conference is led by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador, Adamu Ibrahim Lamuwa.
The annual meeting of Member States is held to discuss policy issues of the Agency. The conference which was declared open by The DG, IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi was presided over by Her Excellency, Ms. Vilawam Mangklatanakul, Ambassador of the Rep. Thailand.
The Vice Chancellor, David Umahi Federal University of Health Science (DUFUHS), Uburu, Ebonyi State, Prof. Jesse Uneke paid a working visit to the Commission on Thursday,10th August,2023. The delegation which was received by Chm/CEO, NAEC, Prof Yusuf A. Ahmed and other Management staff of the Commission held discussions on a wide range of issues which included; research and development, manpower training, development and training of students in nuclear science and technology etc.
The Kano State government led by the Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Alhaji Mohammed Othman paid a working and facility visit to the Chairman/CEO, NAEC, Professor Ahmed Yusuf at the Commission’s Headquarters in Asokoro and NTC, Sheda respectively Wednesday 26th July, 2023. The delegation included the Permanent Secretary of the same minstry, Hajiya Binta Umar Bala. The Chairman/CEO of NAEC Professor Yusuf Ahmed spoke on the need for beneficial collaboration with the Kano State government and NAEC in the areas of peaceful application of nuclear science and technology.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday, 13th July, inducted the Chairman/CEO, NAEC, Prof. Yusuf A. Ahmed into the NANS Patron Hall of Fame by conferring on him the Grand Commander of All Nigerian Students (GCANS). The award was presented by the Secretary General of the body, Comrade Usman Baba on behalf of the President at the Nuclear Technology Center (NTC), Sheda in recognition of his ” inspiration to youths/students, establishing a healthier and productive society on issues related to sustainable development, human capacity building and attitudinal reorientation”.
The Association of Radiographers of Nigeria led by its President Dr. Musa Y. Dambele on Wednesday, 12th July paid a courtesy visit to the Commission. The delegation which was recieved by Chairman NAEC,Prof. Yusuf.A. Ahmed was at the Commission to discuss issues related to the use of radiation healthcare in the areas of radiation safety, quality control and manpower training.
The Africa Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research , Development & Training related to Nuclear Science & Technology(AFRA) is holding it’s 34th general meeting in Algeria from 18th- 22nd, June, 2023.
The IAEA through its Technical Cooperation Programme provides technical, scientific, financial and administrative support to AFRA towards achieving national and developmental goals of Member States.
The DG, Nigeria Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), Dr. Usman Malami Aliyu on Tuesday, 13th June, 2023 paid a courtesy visit to NAEC. The delegation was received by

The objective of the visit was to explore areas of collaboration with NAEC in actualizing the common objective of improving service delivery to cancer patients across the Country. NICRAT was established by the FG in 2017 to serve as the coordinating body to guide scientific improvement to cancer prevention,treatment and care.
The Chairman/CEO, NAEC, Professor Yusuf A. Ahmed inaugurated the newly constituted Project Management Team of AFRA Project RAF 5088 towards facilitating the commercial application of irradiation technologies on Tuesday 23rd May, 2023 at the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF), NTC, Sheda, FCT.
The Director NTC, Dr Hamman Tukur Gabdo who represented the Chairman said it was one of the Regional Projects approved for Nigeria’s participation in the 2022-2024 project cycle.
A group of Governmental Experts (GGE) from 25 Member States met to deliberate on nuclear disarmament. The meeting which was held between 15-19 May, 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland had presentations from Nigeria’s representative Prof. Yusuf A. Ahmed, Chm/CEO, NAEC on the topics “Nuclear Disarmament Verification at Low Numbers and Global Zero” and “Perspectives of Non Nuclear States on Nuclear Disarmament Verification”.

The Senate Committee on Science and Technology on Wednesday 26th April held a public hearing for Stakeholders on the Nigeria Atomic Energy Bill. The Bill titled Nigeria Atomic Energy Act.Cap N91,LFN 2004(Repeal & Re- Enactment) Bill 2022( SB. 1074) was held at the National Assembly Complex.

The Nigeria Defence Academy(NDA) Cadets Educational field trip by the Academy’s Mathematical department is on a two day excursion to the Nuclear Technology Center (NTC) Sheda starting today 4th April, 2023.
The Research and Nuclear Infrastructure Development (RNID) directorate is holding a national technical workshop on the need to manage interface between safety and security of multipurpose Research Reactor(MPRR) project for safe operations. The workshop is ongoing at the telecenter of the Researcher’s Hostel and Conference Center(RHCC)
A Technical Meeting coordinated by Director, Manpower Training and Capacity Development(MTCD), Dr Ebisomu Agedah on the review of the human resources department was held at the Multi-Purpose Laboratory Complex otherwise known as the Glass House at NTC, Sheda.
The Gamma Irradiation Facility(GIF) is already receiving attention to make it function at its optimal level. This was contained in a speech by the Director NTC Dr Hamman Tukur Gabdo at the technical meeting/training on the sustainability of the Gamma Irradiation Facility(GIF) operations, maintenance and management holding at the conference hall of the GIF, NTC Sheda.
The African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development & Training related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) is currently holding it’s annual meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It provides a framework for African Member States to intensify their collaboration through programmes and projects focused on the specific shared needs.
